# Creating A New Album

There are two ways to create an album. Use the walk or social event button when the photos belong to a particular event. Use a normal CMS page when you want a year gallery, a social collection, or any other photo page that is not tied to one event.

## Create an album from a walk or social event

This is the usual path for walk photos. On a walk that has already started, a walk leader or administrator sees **Create album**. One click:

- creates the album and the CMS page for that walk
- writes a short past-tense walk report from the walk description
- opens the guided photo workflow so you can add photos straight away

If the album already exists, the same control reads **Edit album** and reopens that workflow.

The full walkthrough, with screenshots, is [Create a walk photo album from the walk page](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/release-notes/2026-07-26-issue-312). Walk leaders can do this without content-admin rights. Other members, and the public if you allow it, can add photos for the leader to approve. That is covered in [let walk leaders and members add walk photos](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/release-notes/2026-09-06-issue-128).

### The guided photo workflow

When you create or edit a walk album this way, you do not get the full page editor. You get a focused view for the walk report and the photos:

1. **Walk report** - a collapsible editor at the top. Check or rewrite the past-tense write-up, then collapse it so the photos have the screen.
2. **Photos** - drag and drop, **Choose files**, or on a phone **Photo library** and **Take photo**. Multi-select and HEIC are supported. Photos stay on your site.
3. **Save** - unsaved images are counted so you know when to save. After a successful save you can share the album to Facebook and Instagram if those are connected, then go back to the walk.

On any page that already has an album, **edit site** also offers a switch between **Use guided photo workflow** and **Open full album editor**. The guided view is for reviewing the report and adding photos. The full editor is for album settings, cover image, titles, event linking, and the other controls described in [Editing Album Elements](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/images/albums/editing-album-elements).

## Create a standalone album page

Use this for year galleries (for example `/photos/2026`), social collections, or any other page that should hold photos without being created from a walk.

1. Log in as a member with [site edit privileges](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/member-admin/member-privileges).
2. Turn on **edit site** from the header.
3. Open the parent page (for example **Photos**).
4. Create a new page at the path you want. If visiting that path opens a walk or social event instead of **Create Content**, do not use the address bar. Create the page from [**Admin → Page Content Navigator**](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/admin/content/page-content-navigator "{{siteUrl}}") with the path typed in full, for example `photos/2026`. Once the page exists, the year URL will show it.
5. Insert a row of type **Album**. See [Page Row Types](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/editing-content/page-row-types).
6. Next to **Album Name**, click **new** and type a name for this image list. That starts an empty album rather than pointing at an existing one. The detail is in [Editing Album Elements](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/images/albums/editing-album-elements).
7. Add photos as described in [Uploading Images](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/images/albums/uploading-images). Grid is the default view for a new album; you can switch to [Gallery](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/images/albums/gallery), [Carousel](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/images/albums/carousel) or [Backgrounds](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/images/albums/backgrounds).

### Why a year URL might open a walk

A path such as `/photos/2026` is used both for CMS pages and for events. If there is no page at that path yet, NGX looks for an event whose URL contains that last segment. A year such as `2026` or `2027` matches any walk or social event from that year, so you open a walk or a holiday instead of **Create Content**. A year with no matching event, such as `/photos/2028`, offers **Create Content** as expected.

Create the page from the Page Content Navigator, or from the parent Photos page, rather than typing the year into the address bar.

Worked examples of album layouts are in [Example album pages](https://ngx-ramblers.org.uk/how-to/committee/editing-content/example-pages/albums).
