05-Sep-2026 — show a grid reference, postcode or coordinates on the OS map inside NGX instead of linking #385
What's new
Every grid reference and postcode on a walk, event or route page used to open a third-party site. There is now a Locate page inside NGX on Ordnance Survey mapping, opened beneath the page you were on with a Back button, and full screen if you want it.
- Grid references are shown the way Ramblers shares them, ten figures with spaces such as TR 08624 17039; Walk View settings can shorten them or drop the spaces
- A grid reference opens on OS Maps, a postcode in the Google Maps view as before, with the other one switch away; the map can also show OpenStreetMap or an aerial photo with labels
- A search box takes a grid reference, postcode or place name and keeps what you typed; clicking the map or dragging the marker moves the point, and the place, postcode, grid reference and coordinates update on one line
- Directions to the point without leaving the page: Google Maps in place of the map, from where you are or from a postcode, and Waze's live map with the point pinned; Apple Maps on iPhone and iPad; a link opens the point in OS Maps
- The map's height can be dragged and is remembered; everything else about the view is in the address so a link reproduces it
- Three ways in: a Locate a place footer link on every site, a result at the top of site search for a grid reference or postcode, and a Locate the start row in every walk's Related Links, which also gain Directions rows
