19-Sep-2026 — route step flags and distances, easier route following on a phone, full screen maps that #151
build 959 — commit d76aa70
What's new
Route guides show the start and finish clearly and measure their distances correctly. Following a route on a phone is easier to read and control. Full screen maps open the map you chose, keep their look, and come back as they were. Parish maps say they are loading instead of showing an empty map.
At a glance
- The start of a route shows a flag and the finish a chequered flag, instead of a place name squeezed into the step badge
- The start step always reads 0 miles, including on circular walks
- A signpost button on the follow map shows or hides the current step
- The close button sits above the current step, so the step uses the full width
- The follow controls no longer touch the top of the screen
- The dropped-down drawer shows the remaining distance and time before the elevation
- Full screen opens only the map you clicked, even with several maps on a page
- Area group names stay on one line in full screen
- Leaving full screen puts the map back as it was
- Parish maps show a loading spinner until the parishes are drawn
How it behaves
The start and end markers are labelled with a grid reference when one is available, and with Start or End otherwise. On a circular route the start point is as close to the end of the route as to its beginning, so the start step used to show the full length of the walk; it now always reads 0 miles and the end step the full length.
Each map that remembers full screen in the address bar has its own value. The first map on a page keeps maximise=true, so existing links still work, and later maps use maximise=2, maximise=3 and so on, in page order.
How to try it out
- Open a circular route page and check the start step reads 0.0 miles with a flag
- Follow a route on a phone, then use the signpost button to hide and show the current step, and drop the drawer down
- On a page with two area maps, open the second in full screen, then press Escape
