Cowden The 39 Steps

Sir John Mills once lived at Sussex Farmhouse near Cowden and played Scudder in the 1978 film version of John Buchan’s The Thirty-Nine Steps, hence the title of the walk.

We head past St Mary Magdalene Churchand through the Church Yard along the Sussex Border. When Sussex Farmhouse comes into view, we cross Kent Water into the grounds of the Estate heading uphill in the direction of Hethe. After passing Holywych Farm and The Moat we cross the Uckfield Line, then uphill through Sandfield Farm where there are fine views to the South. After passing Rickwoods Farm and  Cowden Station we take the path to Pyle Gate Farm, then South back to Cowden.
