As the continuing hot and dry weather is also the forecast for the day this walk, this walk is designed to be a gentle ramble through a shady Savernake Forest. Many of the footpaths and tracks will be shaded by the trees, although we will still encounter a few areas which could well be in full sun. Starting from the car park, we will head in a southerly direction, passing some of the ancient oak trees, before joining Sawpit Drive, from where we take a somewhat strange shaped route to reach Dark Dale and onwards to the Grand Avenue. Another somewhat unusual shaped route, takes us past the edge of Birch Copse, through Tall Trees, and onto Saddle Ride. Great Lodge Drive then beckons after a second section of the Grand Avenue, from where we return to our cars using mainly shady forest paths.
