Peene
This walk is timed to return in time for the Group Barbecue at Peene museum – but you don’t have to be attending the BBQ to come on the walk.
Start 15.30 from Peene – Please park in the small car park on the opposite side of the road from the railway museum at the start of the permissive Elham Valley Way route which follows the course of the old railway at this point. Alternative parking may be available on the day at the museum or at Newington Village Hall nearby but please come to the EVW car park first.
Our route will follow the Elham Valley Way along the old railway at first and then through Coombe Wood to Coombe Farm to cross the Hythe to Lyminge road at Etchinghill. From here we’ll continue up the EVW – here joined also by the North Downs Way and the Saxon Shore Way to reach the summit of Tolsford Hill where we should have views to the Channel. We’ll then descend southwards to reach an ancient trackway (shown on OS maps as “Pilgrims Way” which skirts the foot of Summerhouse Hill and returns to Newington and Peene via Frogholt.
We will return in time for the BBQ which is at 18.30.
