Romsey coach walk - Longer walk
The Longer Walk
A 8.9 mile linear walk starting at the gates of Mottisfont Abbey. On leaving the car park the route leads west along the road to Abbey Farm, just past the line of the Test Valley Way. From here we head South West to Dunbridge, crossing the railway on our way to Dunbridge Hill where we pause for an early break.
We continue South west to John’s Hill Copse, Carter's Clay and Gambledown Farm. Pausing for a refreshments break we continue directly eastward to Newtown over Doctor's Hill passing the magnificent Iron Age hill fort on Dunwood Hill to the south of our route.
Progressing South East the route passes through woodland towards the evocatively named Awbridge Danes, pronounced "A - bridge" locally (silent "w"). Leaving the woodland behind us we progress further East to re-join the Test Way and enter Squabb Wood and it's abundance of Rhododendron bushes. We are now continuing along the Test Way to pass Roke Manor, Monk’s Cottage and begin our final approach to Romsey. This section is open fields with views across the river Test to Romsey Abbey. Once at Sadler's Mill we turn into the town and walk through Medieval streets leading to Romsey Abbey itself, where the walk ends. A well earned beverage can be enjoyed in the many nearby cafes and bars.
Unfortunately the coach will not be able to park or pick up in Romsey due to traffic restrictions. At 4:00pm (16:00) walkers and non-walkers alike will meet at the Palmerstone Memorial, Market Place SO51 8ZH [What3Words - flinches.walked.cable], for a short walk to the coach which will be parked at the Rapids Leisure Center.
Please be considerate of others and arrive at the Palmerstone Memorial promptly, we plan to board the coach at 4:20 pm, so that the coach can leave on time, 4.30 pm.
Thank you, Neil
