Peak District Trip Summary (4–7 June 2026)
The West Kent Walking Group is planning a 4-day walking trip based around Buxton in the Peak District National Park. All spaces have been taken but if you are interested in other group holidays please contact Mark on marklavenstein@gmail.com
Thursday 4 June – Buxton & Solomon’s Temple
- Arrival and check-in.
- Afternoon circular walk around Buxton including:
- Pavilion Gardens
- Opera House
- Pooles Cavern Country Park
- Solomon’s Temple viewpoint
- Start : St Ann's Well - Public Water Fountain (opposite the Crescent), The Crescent, Buxton
- Distance: 6.2 miles
- Height gain: 848 ft (258m)
- Start: 3:45pm
- Finish: Around 6:30pm
- Evening drinks/food suggested at the Buxton Brewery Tap House.
Friday 5 June – Macclesfield Forest & Shutlingsloe
- Walk through Macclesfield Forest to Shutlingsloe (“Cheshire Matterhorn”).
- Scenic route with hills, reservoirs, moorland, and summit climb.
- Start : Clough House car park (operated by Peak District NP)

- Height gain: 1,770 ft (540m)
- Start: 9:45am
- Finish: Around 3:30pm
- Includes a midway pub stop for drinks.

Saturday 6 June – Castleton & the Great Ridge
- Popular ridge walk in the Dark Peak area via:
- Mam Tor
- Lose Hill
- Back Tor
- Hollins Cross
- Cave Dale
- Start : Castleton Main Car Park (operated by High Peak Borough Council)
- Distance: 10 miles
- Height gain: 1,770 ft (540m)
- Start: 9:45am
- Finish: Around 3:30pm
- Finish drinks at The George pub in Castleton.
- Evening meal booked at Memories of India restaurant in Buxton at 7:30pm.
Sunday 7 June – Chee Dale
- Final walk on departure day after checking out.
- Route follows the River Wye through limestone gorges and stepping stones at Chee Dale.
- Start : Millers Dale (site of former station – now disused)
Nearest Postcode : SK17 8SN - Distance: 6 miles
- Height gain: 1,290 ft (393m)
- Start: 10:00am
- Finish: Around 1:00pm, then travel home.
General Information
- Bring picnic lunches and refreshments for all walks.
- Several walks use pay-and-display parking.
