Woodland Wonder walk through Hawkswood & Scadbury

Starting from the free car park at the top of St Paul’s Wood Hill, this enjoyable 6.25-mile circular walk sets off at 10:00am and explores the beautiful woodland, countryside and historic landscapes of Hawkswood and Scadbury.

The route passes Tong Farm at Hawkswood, offering a glimpse of active rural life alongside open green spaces and peaceful woodland trails. Walkers will also follow sections of the Kyd Brook River as it winds gently through Hawkswood, adding to the tranquil woodland setting. Along the way, there are opportunities to enjoy the peaceful nature pond area, often alive with seasonal wildlife, birds and insects.

The walk also includes the historic Edlmann Monument, a granite pillar linked to the former Hawkswood Estate. The estate was owned by F. Edlmann in 1927 and was later donated as a 230-acre estate to the National Trust by Mr and Mrs Hall in 1957, preserving this important green space for future generations. The route also passes the historic archaeological site at Walsingham, providing further insight into the area’s rich heritage and past settlements hidden within the woodland landscape.

A stop at the Sydney Arms provides an opportunity for toilet breaks, refreshments and a short rest before continuing through Scadbury Park Nature Reserve. There will also be time for a picnic near the popular “bears” area on the Perry Street side of Scadbury, surrounded by ancient woodland and scenic walking paths.

The route is mostly flat until lunchtime, making for a relaxed and accessible woodland ramble. However, sensible footwear is recommended due to some exposed tree roots, uneven woodland terrain and gravel paths in places. 

Please also dress appropriately for the weather conditions on the day and bring a drink, snacks and lunch.

This is a varied and relaxing walk combining nature, local history, woodland scenery and open countryside, with a friendly pace suitable for walkers looking to enjoy the quieter green spaces of the Bromley borough.
